New Deal on Parking for Eton Residents

Eton is to benefit from a new on-street parking scheme aimed at making it easier for local residents and businesses to find parking spaces in their busy town.

The initiative, which starts on Monday (October 31), will see the council taking over responsibility for enforcement of the on-street parking areas and bays to ensure the system works effectively, with more patrols on every road, every day. The police/traffic wardens will still be responsible for enforcing yellow line parking in the town.

The new scheme will:

· give Eton people access to parking facilities near their homes and businesses

· extend residents' parking to include evenings up to 10pm

· encourage Eton's many visitors to use car parks rather than leaving their vehicles on local streets

· make it easier for people visiting local residents to park, with the introduction of a visitor voucher scheme.

Cllr Antony Wood, the council's lead member for traffic and transport, said the popularity of Eton as a visitor destination put severe pressure on parking spaces and residents needed strong support to enable them to park near their homes and businesses.

He paid tribute to Cllr Richard Pratt, ward councillor for Eton and Castle, for his untiring efforts on behalf of local residents to help make the best use of the available on-street parking spaces.

Cllr Wood added: "Following widespread consultation with local people, we have agreed a new approach which will give residents and businesses access to convenient parking. The scheme will be self-funding, ensuring we can have robust enforcement with more council patrols on the streets every day and restoring Eton on-street parking for Eton people."

Residents entitled to parking permits may apply for a maximum of two at a cost of £15 for the first permit and £30 for the second. Permits are available free to residents who are disabled or who are over 60. Permit holders are also eligible to use council-owned car parks in Eton free of charge after 7pm (with the permit clearly displayed).

People visiting local residents will be able to park for up to 24 hours, thanks to new visitor parking vouchers covering the resident parking areas. Each Eton resident will be allowed to buy up to 50 vouchers a year for use by their guests. Vouchers cost £2 each (50p for those aged over 60). There are also permits available for contractors' vehicles which need to be parked close to premises where work is being carried out.

Residents' parking permits and visitor vouchers should be purchased by post using an application form which can be downloaded from the council's website www.rbwm.gov.uk/business/parking_index.htm or requested from the council's parking team on 01628 796239/796153.

Limited on-street parking is also being introduced on a pay and display basis, providing parking for a maximum of one hour. Charges are as follows (with discounts for Advantage Card holders):

Up to 30mins 20p

Up to 30 minutes + Advantage card 10p

Up to 1 hour £1

Up to 1 hour + Advantage card 60p
