Big Lib Dem Win: PCCs Are Being Abolished — Finally
The government’s decision to abolish Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) from 2028 marks a major victory for the Liberal Democrats, who have long argued that the system was a costly, ineffective Conservative experiment. Axing PCCs is expected to save £100 million, with at least £20 million a year going straight into neighbourhood policing — exactly where it belongs.
Lib Dem Home Affairs Spokesperson Max Wilkinson MP has welcomed the move, while pushing for the crucial next step: replacing PCCs not with more political figureheads, but with strong, accountable police and crime boards that truly reflect local communities.
What This Means for Windsor
Windsor Lib Dem Spokesperson, Cllr Amy Tisi said,
“Here in Windsor, our current PCC, Matthew Barber, has hardly set the world alight. His role has too often amounted to being wheeled out for our Conservative MP’s latest photoshoot, rather than delivering the fresh thinking or visible leadership residents deserve.”
Scrapping the role opens the door to something far better:
- Real accountability through local boards rather than one under-scrutinised commissioner
- More officers on the streets, thanks to the savings
- Better transparency and long-term planning for community safety
This is a chance to shift power back towards local people — and away from a post that never quite delivered for Windsor.
The local Lib Dem team will be fighting to ensure these changes lead to stronger policing, smarter oversight and safer streets for everyone.
