Conservative Election Lies Exposed as Council Set to Sell Off Leisure Centres

27 Sep 2014

Conservatives at the Royal Borough are set to sell off the council's leisure centres to the private sector, after the locally run Royal Borough Leisure Trust pulled out of bidding to take over the council's leisure facilities.

The move is in direct contradiction to promises made by the Conservatives in the 2011 council elections, in response to Liberal Democrat literature which had exposed their thinking on the matter.

Under the plans a private company would get to run the leisure centres for 20 years. It is unclear what protections would be in place for residents wanting to use the facilities, both in terms of open access to the facilities and admission charges, with the result that the move could be yet another form of Conservative Stealth Tax.

Our leaflets pointed to Conservative plans to sell off public assets, including leisure centres.

The Conservative response, stiil on their website stated: "This is just desparate last minute rubbish from the LibDems."

3 years on and this is just one more Conservative election lie exposed.
