Strong Leadership and Honest Recovery: One Year On from FISP
The RBWM Lib Dem administration is steadily fixing the mess — with honest leadership and measured, credible improvements.
Lib Dem Cabinet Member Cllr Mark Wilson has written to the Government to formally challenge the proposed Fair Funding Review 2.0, which would leave the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead among the lowest-funded councils in England.
Despite having full responsibility for high-cost services such as adult and children’s social care, the proposals would force RBWM to rely almost entirely on council tax, while retaining virtually none of the business rates raised locally. The letter sets out why this approach is neither fair nor sustainable, and why it risks shifting an unreasonable financial burden onto residents.
It also makes clear that these proposals undermine the genuine progress made by the Liberal Democrats in stabilising the council’s finances after the damage left by previous Conservative administrations — effectively moving the goalposts just as recovery was underway.
This is a clear, evidence-based challenge on behalf of our borough and its residents — and a reminder that Liberal Democrats will not stay silent when “fair funding” turns out to be anything but.
