Lib Dems Seek to Secure Improvements for Forces Housing
Good news for Windsor military families as Government accepts Lib Dem MP’s amendment to improve army housing.
The Liberal Democrats have secured a huge win for military families - the government has finally given in to a longstanding campaign to improve the quality of military family homes.
Our military personnel sacrifice so much for our country, the least they deserve is a decent home for them and their families.
Military Families have suffered for many years, living in dire conditions with pest infestations, black mould, damp, flooding, and unreliable heating and hot water supply, even in winter.
Local resident surveys and research nationally have shown while the country rightly celebrates the bravery and sacrifice of our service personnel, their housing system was letting them and their families down very badly.
For far too long, Ministry of Defence housing has not been subject to existing Decent Home Standards legislation that has protected social housing tenants.
The Liberal Democrats have changed that.
The new amendment to the Renters’ Rights Bill will, for the first time, require the Ministry of Defence to assess service family housing annually and report on whether it meets the Decent Homes Standard - creating a clear, statutory mechanism for identifying and addressing shortcomings.
It should never have taken this long.
The last Conservative government rejected previous attempts to amend the Renters’ Reform Bill last year. To add further insult to injury, the current Labour Administration also initially rejected the amendment.
Thankfully, after relentless campaigning by the Liberal Democrat Team in Parliament, the government has finally conceded in the House of Lords.
Victories like this show what the Liberal Democrats can achieve. It’s proof that if we keep fighting for what we believe in, we can improve lives for the better.
Why not volunteer, donate to, or join the Liberal Democrats?
Together, we can help and create more successful campaigns to improve the quality of life of people across our great country.
