Windsor backs the call for quieter fireworks
Windsor residents are sending a clear message on fireworks. Our constituency is now in the top 10 nationally for signatures on the petition calling for a reduction in the maximum noise level of fireworks sold to the public, from 120 decibels to 90 decibels. So far, 554 people in Windsor have signed.
While fireworks bring enjoyment to many, they can cause real distress for others. Loud fireworks are frightening for animals, including pets, farm livestock and wildlife, and can lead to serious injury as animals try to escape the noise. Veterans and others living with PTSD can also be badly affected by sudden bangs.
In November, Liberal Democrats at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead brought a motion to Full Council, which was approved. The Council agreed to raise awareness of the impact fireworks can have on animal welfare and vulnerable people, and to urge central government to introduce legislation limiting the noise level of fireworks sold to the public for private displays to 90 decibels.
We can all help by choosing quieter fireworks for private or public displays. The strong support from Windsor residents shows this is an issue people care deeply about, and Windsor Liberal Democrats will continue to push for a sensible and compassionate approach.
